How to Calculate Percentages and Fractions of Quantities

We have to find the amount of deposit that Claire has to leave with her new dress. She has to pay a deposit of 20% on a dress that costs $300. So it’s 20% of $300 that we have to find. Do you remember how to do it?

First, we change 20% to a fraction. A percentage is out of 100. So that’s 20 hundredths or 20 over 100 times the total amount, which is $300. We cancel first, which leaves us with 20 times 3. 20 times 3 equals 60.

So Claire has to leave a deposit of $60.
