What Year 5 maths covers

Children in Year 5 are 9 to 10 years old. The national curriculum for Year 5 maths covers:

  • Number: numbers to 1,000,000, negative numbers and Roman numerals to 1,000.
  • Number facts: prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers.
  • Written methods: long multiplication (up to four digits by two digits) and short division.
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages: comparing and adding fractions, mixed numbers, decimals to three places, and percentages.
  • Measurement: converting metric units, area and perimeter, and estimating volume.
  • Geometry and data: measuring angles in degrees, reflection and translation, line graphs and tables.
