What Year 1 maths covers
Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1 in England. Children are 5 to 6 years old. The national curriculum for Year 1 maths covers:
- Number: counting to 100, reading and writing numbers to 100, one more and one less.
- Adding and subtracting: number bonds to 20, and adding and subtracting one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20.
- Multiplication and division: simple sharing and grouping with objects and pictures.
- Fractions: halves and quarters of a shape or a set of objects.
- Measurement: length, mass, capacity, time and coins.
- Shapes: common 2D and 3D shapes, position and direction.
